Grief without Death

Hello, it’s Jacqui here, I’m happy you’ve joined me for another Wednesday. Welcome to another episode of Community Creatives. If there is anything that comes up for you that may be triggering in this Podcast, please reach out to your relevant mental health services. I will put the service details for Perth, WA in the episode description.

I really just want to take this moment to share with you, my thoughts, my learnings and what this journey, I guess, has meant to me. Today, I want to talk to you about grief.

The difference is that grief can occur without death. Now, there are many different times in our life where we faced an end or a death. And it isn't always a literal death. It isn't always a time where we have lost a loved one. Those times are hard enough.

But what I'm talking about today, is grief attached to loss, and change. And when we feel that everything is spinning out of control and everything that we know about our reality and our life; it shifts, and we have to forget a chapter and move forward. And sometimes the real grief is heavy when we don't know that it's coming. It hits us the hardest when we least expect it. Now, that is the nature of all grief. I do understand that - but, I want to give you a safe space to accept that there can be grief. Insurmountable grief! Without a physical death.

We go through life changes, inevitably there's going to be things that aren't the same as they were and things that we mourn in our life, and things will end. Friendships will end. Jobs will end. Things will come and go in the seasons, as we change, as our life changes, as our relationships change. Change is the only constant that we can anticipate. And when we've changed, there is excitement, yes, but there's also grief. There's also loss and fear. And acknowledging this is a part of life. And it's okay to feel like this.

It's okay to grieve for the life that you once had. It's okay to feel sorrowful about what could have been. Or what you've had to give up to embrace a new version of yourself, whether that's dependent on your living situations, your finances, your abilities, your capacity. Hey. It's okay to grieve. You will find your way out of this. You will recover a new sense of normal, and you will find yourself again. Even if you need to spend the next several years of your life, investing in who you are now, it's okay. Have faith in the process. Have faith in yourself.

All my love, Jacqui
